A router handling several simultaneous video streams can hit its own processing limits well before the internet plan's bandwidth cap is reached.
Older routers, especially those provided free by an ISP years ago, often can't handle modern 4K or multi-stream loads efficiently even on a fast connection. Wi-Fi congestion also compounds during evening hours specifically because that's when neighboring households' wireless networks are also busiest, adding interference on top of your own network's load. Switching to a wired Ethernet connection for the streaming device removes this variable entirely and is one of the more reliable fixes.
Adaptive streaming technology is designed to respond to changing network conditions by automatically lowering video quality to keep playback smooth rather than stopping entirely. When this system works as intended, a stream might drop from HD to a lower resolution during a congested stretch and recover once conditions improve, often without the viewer even noticing a pause.
When buffering happens repeatedly despite this safety mechanism, it usually means the connection is dropping below the minimum threshold needed for even the lowest quality tier, or the interruption is happening in short bursts that don't give the adaptive system time to settle. Checking a device's playback or streaming settings for a manual quality cap can sometimes help, since forcing a lower fixed bitrate uses less bandwidth than letting the stream repeatedly attempt and fail at higher quality.
