Every current Mac, whether it's running an M-series chip or an older Intel processor, can run IPTV software without issue. What differs is how the video gets decoded. Apple Silicon Macs include dedicated hardware decoders for modern codecs like H.265/HEVC, so the CPU barely has to work even on high-bitrate streams. Intel Macs generally fall back to software decoding for the same content, which means more CPU usage, more heat, and faster battery drain on a laptop running unplugged.
In practice this rarely stops a stream from playing — it just changes how comfortable the experience is during long viewing sessions. If you're on an older Intel Mac and notice fan noise or slowdown during playback, that's a decoding load issue, not a sign the service or app is broken.
IPTV services typically hand you access in one of two formats: an M3U playlist URL, which is essentially a plain-text list of channel streams the player reads through, or Xtream Codes login credentials (server address, username, password), which lets the app pull the channel list and guide data dynamically. Hot Player works with both M3U links and Xtream Codes, and Xtream Codes support is what unlocks features like a full electronic program guide, catch-up TV, and organized categories inside the app.
If a player only asks for a playlist URL, it's using M3U. If it has separate fields for server, username, and password, it's set up for Xtream Codes. Using the wrong format in the wrong field is one of the most common setup mistakes on Mac.
When a stream buffers specifically on a Mac but runs fine on another device on the same network, the cause is usually local rather than network-wide. Check whether the Mac is on Wi-Fi versus the working device being on Ethernet — Wi-Fi interference from other 2.4GHz devices is a common culprit. Also check Activity Monitor for background apps competing for CPU or bandwidth, since Time Machine backups, cloud sync tools, and browser tabs with autoplay video can all quietly eat into the resources a stream needs.
Some Mac users run a VPN alongside their IPTV setup, usually for privacy on public or shared networks rather than to change the content itself. It's worth knowing that a VPN adds an extra layer of encryption and routing, which can reduce throughput and increase latency — how much depends heavily on the VPN protocol and the server location you connect through. A VPN server that's geographically far away, or overloaded with users, will do more to cause buffering than almost anything else in your setup.
If you use a VPN and notice streaming issues that weren't there before, testing with the VPN briefly disabled is the fastest way to confirm whether it's the source of the problem before troubleshooting anything else.

Both routes work. Hot Player is available through the Mac App Store, which is the simplest install path since macOS handles permissions automatically. Some IPTV players are only distributed as direct downloads from the developer's site, which means you'll need to approve them in System Settings > Privacy & Security since they aren't notarized the same way. Neither route is inherently more reliable for streaming quality — the difference is just how much friction you hit during setup.
Safari and dedicated players use different underlying frameworks to decode video, so the same stream can behave differently in each. Safari leans on macOS's built-in AVFoundation stack, while dedicated IPTV apps use their own decoding libraries (often FFmpeg-based). If one is stuttering and the other isn't, it's usually a codec support gap rather than a connection problem, which is why it's worth keeping both a browser option and a native player installed.
Intel Macs still run IPTV players fine, including Hot Player, which does not require Apple Silicon. The practical difference is efficiency: Apple Silicon Macs handle hardware-accelerated video decoding (especially H.265/HEVC streams) with less CPU load and better battery life. An Intel Mac decoding a heavy stream in software will run hotter and drain a laptop battery faster, but it won't fail to play.
Not always. AirPlay mirrors or extends whatever's on your Mac's screen to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV, and most IPTV players support this since it's a system-level macOS feature, not something the app has to build separately. The catch is mirrored playback runs through your Mac's processing rather than being handed off natively the way some streaming apps do it, so a heavily loaded Mac can introduce lag in the AirPlay output even if local playback looks smooth.
