Not every Smart TV can install a proper IPTV app. Budget models, older Tizen and webOS versions, and some regional TV brands run a locked-down app store that either doesn't carry an IPTV player at all or only offers an outdated one. Sideloading — installing an app outside the official store — is technically possible on some Android TV and Google TV sets, but Samsung and LG generally block it entirely, and even where it works it can leave you with an unstable, unsupported build.

The app you install matters less than what's running underneath it. Smart TVs, unlike dedicated streaming boxes, aren't built primarily for video decoding — their processors and memory are shared across the whole TV interface, ads, background services, and whatever app you're using. On a TV that's three or more years old, this shows up as slow app launches, occasional freezing on channel changes, or the interface lagging behind your remote input.
This isn't specific to IPTV; the same TV will struggle with any demanding streaming app. If you're seeing consistent stutter that a good internet connection doesn't explain, the TV's onboard chip is usually the bottleneck, not the stream itself. A separate streaming device with its own processor sidesteps the problem because it isn't sharing resources with the TV's own software.
If your TV brand isn't covered by a native app yet, casting from a phone or tablet is a reasonable stopgap. Chromecast built into Android TV/Google TV sets, AirPlay on newer Samsung and LG models, and Miracast on some Android TVs all let you push video from a mobile app to the big screen without installing anything on the TV itself.
The tradeoff is control and stability: your phone has to stay awake and connected for the session to continue, notifications can interrupt playback, and casting adds a layer of network handoff that a native app doesn't need. It's fine for occasional viewing but not a long-term substitute for an app running directly on the TV or a streaming box.
IPTV apps on Smart TVs get updated more frequently than most preinstalled TV software, because streaming formats, codecs, and playlist protocols change over time. An app that was working fine six months ago can start throwing errors after a backend change if the TV never pulled the update. Samsung and LG usually update store apps automatically when the TV is connected to the internet and left in standby, but Android TV devices sometimes need a manual check in the Play Store if auto-update is disabled.
Firmware is a separate layer worth checking too — TV manufacturers periodically patch the operating system itself, and an outdated firmware version can cause an otherwise current app to behave unpredictably, including crashes on launch or broken video codecs.
Often yes, but not by installing anything on the TV. Older Tizen, webOS, and budget Android TV models frequently can't run a current app at all. The workaround is a separate streaming device — an Android TV box, Fire TV Stick, or similar — connected by HDMI, which runs a full modern app and uses the old TV only as a display.
A dedicated streaming device is generally more reliable. Smart TV operating systems prioritize the TV's own interface and share limited processing power across everything running on it, while a streaming box or stick is purpose-built for exactly one job. If your TV is a few years old or you've had crashing or buffering issues, moving to an external device usually resolves it without changing anything about your subscription.
Phones and tablets released in the last few years typically have more processing power dedicated to a single app than a mid-range Smart TV does. TVs also run background processes for their own smart features, ads, and voice assistants that compete for the same limited memory. If crashing is frequent, check for pending app or firmware updates first, since that resolves a large share of these cases.
